The Chippenham Games on Tuesday and Wednesday got off to a fantastic start, with children arriving full of excitement and ready for the day ahead. Wearing their matching team T‑shirts, ten teams took part in a procession around the arena, led by Mr Symes from Sheldon School. It was a brilliant sight and set the tone for what became two wonderful days.
Once gathered in front of the stage, the children were welcomed by Paul Harvey and Mr Norgrove from Abbeyfield School. Mrs Percy, from Hardenhuish School, then addressed everyone with the Games Pledge, which the children repeated to each other. It was a lovely moment and a fitting way to begin an event built on friendship, teamwork and trying your best.
From there, the children moved into their carousel of activities, supported by young leaders from all three secondary schools. Throughout the day they threw themselves into everything on offer: indo boarding, golf, lacrosse, dance, archery, rugby, fitness, frisbee, the mini marathon, and even face painting. Everywhere you looked there were smiles, encouragement and children giving things a go.
At the end of each day, we were joined by the Mayor/Deputy Mayor, who helped bring the Games to a close and congratulated the children on their efforts. At the start of the day, we asked every child to leave knowing they had tried their best, had fun, and made a new friend. Watching them throughout the event, it certainly felt like they did all three. Many of those friendships will continue as they move into the next chapter of their school journey.
We had a great couple of days, and we really hope the children did too. A huge thank you to all the coaches, teachers, young leaders, Stanley Park staff and Chippenham Town Council for helping make the Games such a success.
