Our multi skills festival which focused on fundamental movement skills (FMS) like running, jumping, throwing, and balancing are the foundation for all physical activities and sports. For our Year 3 and Year 4 children, these skills are developed through a carousel of activities, where children rotate between different stations focused on specific movements. This approach keeps learning fun and helps children improve their coordination, balance, and agility. The parachute station is always a favorite with its bright colors and balls flying around the parachute.
Mastering FMS is crucial as it prepares children for more complex sports and activities. Without these festival teaching us these skills, this helps our children who may have struggle with sports like football, basketball, or gymnastics. Developing FMS early on supports not only physical growth but also social and cognitive skills, like teamwork and communication.
Going beyond the school site and working with older sports ambassadors from a secondary school offers many benefits. Firstly, it provides positive role models, inspiring younger children to improve their skills. Older students can also teach our children new techniques in a fresh, peer led way, making learning enjoyable. Additionally, visiting a secondary school exposes children to new sports and activities, building their confidence and encouraging them to stay active.
This experience not only enhances their physical skills but also helps develop a lifelong love for sport, as children see that physical activity can be fun at any age. Working with older ambassadors supports both the physical and social development of younger students, while sparking new interests in sports.
